Sony Acquires Bungie Studios

Bungie Studios the original creators of Halo and Destiny have been acquired by Sony and are joining the PlayStation family. The reported acquisition cost is $3.6 Billion for Sony who now have a legendary developer under their wing. With this, Sony could have the potential to deliver a certain type of exclusive that they’ve been lacking, a successful shooter to combat Microsoft’s Halo.

Bungie will remain an independent and multi-platform studio and publisher. So we shouldn’t expect any exclusive games for PlayStation anytime in the near future.

“First off, I want to be very clear to the community that Bungie will remain an independent and multi-platform studio and publisher. As such, we believe it makes sense for it to sit alongside the PlayStation Studios organization, and we are incredibly excited about the opportunities for synergies and collaboration between these two world-class groups.”

Not only will Bungie benefit from being part of PlayStation, but Sony believes Bungie will benefit the entire PS family.

“Bungie’s world-class expertise in multi-platform development and live game services will help us deliver on our vision of expanding PlayStation to hundreds of millions of gamers. Bungie is a great innovator and has developed incredible proprietary tools that will help PlayStation Studios achieve new heights under Hermen Hulst’s leadership.”

Recently, Microsoft had acquired Activision Blizzard and that raised a lot of questions about exclusivity, but for now Call of Duty will remain multi-platform.

It’s not surprising seeing Sony acquired Bungie as they’ve worked together when Bungie Studios was under Activision and had DLC for Destiny exclusively to PlayStation consoles.
