Now that 2016 is almost over, I thought I’d do a article about what I think Sony will do in 2017. The PS4 has been out for just over 3 years at this point, and It did take Sony awhile to get into gear with exclusive games (2015 is when they really took off). However, in 2017 and beyond Sony has an insane amount of games due out such as God of War, Spider-Man PS4, Detroit Become Human, The Last of Us Part II and Days Gone. Not to mention Persona 5, Yakuza 0 and 6 and Death Stranding. Among other exclusives from Sony’s 2nd party developers. Overall PlayStation is in a fantastic spot when it comes to games, I’d say both Nintendo and Microsoft can’t match the sheer amount in terms of number of games and quality, but that doesn’t mean what the competition has coming won’t be fantastic as well, I just prefer the sort of games Sony offers. This year Sony unleashed a huge amount of hardware from the slimmer and smaller PS4 (PS4 Slim) and PlayStation 4 Pro which is currently the most powerful console available and will be until autumn 2017. Plus the virtual reality headset PSVR along with a new Platinum Wireless headset with 3D audio. Sony also announced the Razor Raiju pro controller and Nacon Revolution pro controller which have been designed for eSports and offer the ability to customize your controller with extra buttons or change the analogue sticks etc. Similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Elite controller.
Now onto 2017, first and foremost, from now on when Sony announces a games release date it will get released on that date. Since the PS4 release. Sony has had a bad habit of announcing release date and then not being able to stick to that promise. Sony has said that they are fully aware of this and will be more careful in the future. So if we get a release date for God of War this year I fully expect it to be released on that date that Sony picks.
Talking about games, we already have release dates for Gravity Rush 2 which has gone gold and due out in January and Yakuza 0 for January. Nioh and Horizon Zero Dawn in February (March in the UK and Ireland) and Persona 5 in April as a few of the games to be released in early 2017. As for games Sony hasn’t announced a release date for, but have announced is Gran Turismo Sport is due out at some point this year along with Ni No Kuni 2 (which is by Bandai Namco) and while Sony hasn’t given any date yet. Sony Bend Studios upcoming Day’s Gone.
Days Gone is most likely going to get released this year as they have been working on this for a long time (their last game was Uncharted Golden Abyss for the PlayStation Vita in 2011). Possible games could be God of War as well but not 100% sure on that yet, but I do think after Day’s Gone it will be the next big AAA game Sony will release. I also expect Sony to expand PlayStation Now to more European countries which allows you to stream PS3 games to your PS4, PC, and select Sony Blu Ray players and smart TV’s and select Samsung smart TV’s, they expanded to Belgium and the Netherlands last year, but I can see them finally doing a big push in 2017. Along with adding PS1 and PS2 games ( select PS2 games are available on PS4 with trophy support).
Sony will have more competition in 2017, in the form of the hybrid Nintendo Switch and Microsoft’s upcoming mid generation updated Xbox One known as Project Scorpio right now. Sony is likely working on the PlayStation 5, but that won’t be out for at least 2 years but Sony could tease it at E3 2017 like Microsoft did with Project Scorpio. However, I don’t think Sony should be worried they have a insane amount of games to come out in the next few years and already have the best selling console of this generation which means people are more likely to go where their friends are, plus they have deals for Call of Duty, Destiny, etc to cover the big eSports games (Socom and a new Killzone game would be great to see as Shadow Fall came out 3 years ago, and it has been a long time since we got a Socom game). I would like Sony to expand PlayStation Video to more countries as well as it is currently only available in a few and PlayStation Vue is only available in the United States of America though I do think PSVue will only be in the US for a long time maybe the UK will get it at some-point. Overall 2017 looks to be a amazing time to be a PlayStation gamer. I can’t wait to see what Sony does and I also hope that Nintendo and Microsoft have a great year as well!
