Sony has announced that the company will be taking a break from the Electronic Entertainment Expo (also known as E3) this year. As one of the biggest faces that have been participating in the event since the birth of the event, many are shocked to see that Sony Interactive Entertainment will be absent next year.
Videogame news outlet, Game Informer got an official statement from Sony regarding their choice to pull out of E3 for 2016:
“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community,” Game Informer was told by Sony, “PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you.”
The outlet asked if Sony will host an event separated from the event similar to EA Play, but was left with a response stating that the company “will not activate or hold a press conference around E3.”
On top of Sony previously revealing that the company will not be hosting their annual event, PlayStation Experience this year. When the company announced today that they will not be attending one of the biggest gaming trade shows of the year it caught the fans off guard.
Game Informer has stated that the ESA (Entertainment Software Association), the organization that hosts the event will be making a statement regarding Sony’s choice. As E3 has pivoted their priority to be more of an fan oriented event, this might have influenced Sony’s reason to go for a more diverse approach to the traditional presentations we are all familiar with.
