Of course, Sony’s gaming venture focuses on console gaming at PlayStation. And for more than half a decade, virtual reality has been part of this endeavor for the Japanese firm. With the PlayStation 5, a second iteration headset shipped last February – PlayStation VR 2. And for the most part answers for what players expects for the peripheral with the new hardware required to accommodate for the titles available.
But, the device is lacking compared to its predecessor. With an already established platform on PlayStation 4, it was a surprise that Sony Interactive Entertainment did not enable support for the titles of the aforementioned platform. And even more, reports tell that PlayStation VR 2 is also trailing well behind the likes of Meta Quest this past holiday which shows how niché of a market virtual reality really is.
In a new PlayStation Blog post, the firm presses that support for more platforms is coming for PlayStation VR 2. Similar to Meta Quest being compatible with PC hardware, Sony Interactive Entertainment is working on a feature akin to that. Sony words the decision to help benefit access to a greater lineup of titles for the peripheral.
“Also, we’re pleased to share that we are currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC to offer even more game variety in addition to the PS VR2 titles available through PS5. We hope to make this support available in 2024, so stay tuned for more updates.” In a previous statement from PlayStation, this appears to be a solution for its troubling path for virtual reality.
Speaking to The Financial Times, head of global business Eric Lempel told that the VR space remains a tricky market to find success. “It’s a bit of a challenging category right now,” he says, adding: “there was a higher expectation generally for what VR would do to gaming.” You can read the full report by heading here.
