The PlayStation VR has proven to be a bit of a success for Sony, with the company selling over 700,000 units by the end of 2016 and reaching over a million during the 1st quarter of 2017. Now we also know just how well the PSVR has been doing this year so far, as a new report by market research firm SuperData has revealed that 375,000 PSVR units were sold during the Q1 2017.
SuperData also expects the PSVR to do well this year, saying that it’s on track to sell over 2.6 million units in 2017 in spite Sony not actively promoting the headset and slightly steering away from it being just a games platform.
SuperData’s Head of VR/AR Stephanie Llamas told
“Sony has been more vocal about the PSVR being about VR, not games. They are working with companies for commercial applications, even though it is not the obvious first choice. But even the PlayStation is part of a larger effort to bring an entertainment ecosystem into the home – not just gaming experiences. They are going to the same route with the PSVR”
Nintendo or Microsoft haven’t talked about their future Virtual Reality plans yet and if they will ever move forward with them. We will have to wait and see at E3 2017.
