Just last week, Greg Russo officially disclosed the apparent Mortal Kombat film that was previously passed around with word of the project’s progress as the movie is paved for a March 2021 release. But on top of Russo already working on the film adaptation for NetherRealm’s fighter, he is also involved with yet another video game-related film as well.
According to entertainment outlet Deadline, New Line Cinemas has begun the first segment for a Space Invaders film adaptation and already producing the Mortal Kombat flick, has chosen Greg Russo to write the script for this movie as well. Warner Bros. purchased the rights for the 1978 Taito Corporation title and gave the project to New Line as like with the other film that is already in production.
Atop of New Line Cinemas having their hands in the upcoming film, Weed Road Pictures will also be involved with Akiva Goldsman (I, Robot & I Am Legend) alongside Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum) and Tory Tunnell (Robin Hood) to produce for the film.
For the core of the plot, it will follow suit the basis of the game: outer space ships slowly move their way towards the defending vessel that is fighting off said invaders. Left with the implication from the antagonizing ships advancement towards Earth if successful, the film is expected to primarily hold a primary setting outside of the planet’s atmosphere.
Regarding the decided cast for the film or the aimed box office release of the forthcoming Space Invaders film, New Line Cinema has yet to disclose detail on either of the two.
What do you think about Space Invaders being made into a high production film?
