Spelunky 2 Release Date Pushed Into Next Year

The current whereabouts for the upcoming sequel to Mossmouth’s 2008 roguelike platformer Spelunky has been under wraps since the game’s initial announcement back nearly a year ago. Although fans have been quite patient as the follow-up title has been awaited for more than a decade now, some began to question the slated 2019 launch timeframe for the forthcoming title.

Unfortunately, those who have been worrying about the game’s scheduled release for this year were right to be worried as the developer has announced that Spelunky 2’s 2019 launch will be pushed into next year.

Mossmouth’s Derek Yu confirmed on Twitter recently that the team might have overshot the release window for their next title, but to “not be off target.” Yu emphasizes that despite the sudden change to release the game beyond this year, that Mossmouth is still making good time currently on developing the coming sequel.

While on the topic of the new game, Yu then adds on to the thread to further apologize for the lack of updates for the game’s development and clarifies the difficulty of communicating on top of developing. Drawing attention to the game’s environments from the announcement trailer, Yu shares to have added more detail to make the levels “pop” as much as possible.

Ultimately, Yu ends the thread sharing his excitement to talk more about the game by revealing that the official launch date for the sequel will be disclosed when Mossmouth is fully confident to release that information.

Spelunky 2 is listed for PlayStation 4 and PC.
