Splitgate 2 from 1047 Games is getting closer to releasing but first there will be an open beta going live on May 22, 2025. The game will release on PC via Epic Games Store, Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
The Splitgate 2 Open Beta will have over 25 weapons, 15+ maps, and over 10 game modes to play. This is still only 70% of what the full game will be.
At PAX East 2025, Rectify Gaming had the opportunity to chat with Ian Proulx, the CEO of 1047 Games and the creator behind Splitgate 2.
Below is our interview with him on various topics:
Tyler: Will Portals still be the core aspect of the game?
Ian: Of Course. Our tagline is Portals change everything so that’s what makes this game unique.
Tyler: What Game modes can we expect to see in Splitgate 2?
Ian: So what we’ve shown so far is a number of four game modes, Hot Zone, which is kind of our take on King of the Hill, and Splitball, which is sort of a futuristic version of Capture the Flag.
Firecracker is sort of, I think, search and destroy with bonds made specifically for Splitgate. You’ve got a bunch of other modes, domination, TDM, more coming that we are going to reveal soon.
We just announced the return of Takedown, one of the fan favorites.
Takedown is a 3v3 mode where Kills shorten respawns, deaths increase the timer, and if you get a team wipe, you win the round.
Then, of course, we’ve got our multi-team modes. 24 players, three teams of eight, and there are a number of variants within that as well.
Tyler: Any potential for Battle Royale or PvE style events?
Ian: I mean, never, say never, but probably not.
You know, I think right now I’m just focused on what we do, let’s do it better than anyone else.
Tyler: Will there be a campaign or lore to potentially fill out the world?
Ian: I mean, one day it would be super fun to do a mini campaign as a DLC or something. But don’t get your hopes up because that’s a lot of work to get right, and it’s not a skill set that we currently have.
Tyler: Will Splitgate 2 be Esports oriented with tournaments?
Ian: I don’t know yet. To me, my focus is I want to make a fun game that people love. And I’m totally open to feedback.
I want to get feedback from the fans and from the community and iterate accordingly. And let’s see where they take it, right?
Tyler: Will there be earnable free cosmetics or will there be an in-game shop?
Ian: Yes to both. There’s going to be earnable rewards and things you’ll have to pay for, but all cosmetic. No pay to win.
Tyler: Will there be any collaborations or crossovers?
Ian: Nothing is planned to be clear. Like, I think Master Chief could exist in the Splitgate Universe.
Would it be so cool to have a Portal collaboration or put Master Chief in the game? I’d love to do stuff like that, but to me it’s got to make sense.
Tyler: As a developer, do you consider releasing on the Nintendo Switch 2 given how successful the Switch 1 was?
Ian: I haven’t talked to anybody at Nintendo, so if you know somebody, please introduce me, or if you are at Nintendo reading this article, please reach out.
No, seriously, I would love to come to as many platforms as possible. I have a Switch and I am definitely getting a Switch 2. I think it would be super sick to play Splitgate 2 on it.
For now, we are focused on Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store, then PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. So the game is really well optimized, and it’s on a lot of platforms, so adding another one wouldn’t be too much work.
The first Splitgate received over 22 million downloads worldwide, and that wasn’t even half the size of Splitgate 2. 1047 Games hasn’t revealed a release date yet for the full game, but it will be this year. They are always looking to improve the game to meet the community’s needs.
