For those that can recall the launch of Marvel’s Avengers, the hype running off the four film run of the beloved comic book heroes when translating to the video game formula left many fans underwhelmed. Following its release in fall 2020, it was reported that the new entry swiftly fell off as the project costed Square Enix more than $63 million from the extended development time for the game.

And following with the reveal for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, many believed the same fate was already laid out for the new single-player experience. Yes, unlike the previous Marvel Comics title, this new release starring a notorious cast of heroes will be told through a singular viewpoint. However, the reception of the game soon came in to be against initial concerns even awarding the game Best Narrative at The Game Awards.

But, Square Enix in its latest financial results report reveals that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy did not meet its expectations at launch. Despite the underwhelming release – compared to the launch of Marvel’s Avengers and Final Fantasy VII Remake from last year – it is said to be recouping sales at an impressive state than anticipated.

“‘Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy,’ its net sales were lower than in the same period of the previous fiscal year, which had seen the release of such titles as ‘FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE’ and ‘Marvel’s Avengers,’” the report reveals on its original performance upon release last fall.

Adding, “Despite strong reviews, the game’s sales on launch undershot our initial expectations. However, sales initiatives that we kicked off in November 2021 and continued into the new year have resulted in sales growth, and we intend to work to continue to expand sales to make up for the title’s slow start.”

Additionally, word-of-mouth is expected to further the popularity for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy thanks to the recent addition of the game to Xbox Game Pass. Alike Marvel’s Avengers, the new game has already been added to the service’s library and will provide more players to its front gates. You can read the full report by heading here.
