It is no secret that Square Enix is already operating on the next remake for the Final Fantasy VII series. Previously, the first entry shipped in 2020 became one of the most praised titles that year even for a Game of the Year nomination at The Game Awards then. Additionally, it confirmed 2024 is to welcome sequel Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and celebrates the game coming on two discs.
Looking elsewhere, the firm also rolled out the entirety of Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster previously. However, the game earned more traction recently when it launched this past April for Nintendo Switch & PlayStation 4. In terms of the response from its consumers, Square Enix considers this legacy series to be a success.
When speaking at a recent shareholders Q&A, Square Enix addresses that it is exploring more opportunities for future remastered series of its older titles. Thank you, Video Game Chronicles. “Final Fantasy I-VI Pixel Remaster has been well received. Are there plans to remaster other past titles? Personally, I would like to play Xenogears,” the publisher was asked.
“We will refrain from sharing information about new titles, but we are considering various ideas within the company and hope that you will look forward to forthcoming announcements.” posed from the shareholders question, it is understood more remastered beyond Final Fantasy could be on the table. Square Enix also answers on the “longer gaps between game releases than its peers do.”
It responds stating: “I will refrain from speaking in specifics, but I will say that we believe that the strengthening of our internal development organization will be of benefit as the difficulty of developing major titles is becoming extremely high, which also has implications for development lead times. We hope that this reinforcement of our organization will promote the development not only of major titles but also new IPs under the new management team.”
As for other reconfigured projects in the pipeline, Square Enix already revealed a new one is on the horizon. At the most recent Nintendo Direct this summer, the publisher revealed Star Ocean The Second Story R which is a remake of the second mainline installment for the series.
