Google despite the more than rocky launch of stream-based gaming platform Stadia continues to work on the rougher edges for the November-birthed service as we jump into a new decade for the gaming market. Alongside the approaching Xbox and PlayStation 5 that are expected to arrive next Holiday season, Google will have to act fast onto keeping their footing as a video game platform.

One issue that Stadia faced atop of the more apparent problems that followed at launch last month was software: currently, the only unique IP available on the service is Tequila Works’ Gylt. However, ways to expand the platform’s first-party library is through forming or even acquiring already established studios to craft new experiences only available on Stadia.

Today, Google revealed that self-named Stadia Games and Entertainment have successfully acquired developer for the upcoming title Journey to the Savage Planet, Typhoon Games.

The Typhoon team will be joining our first Stadia Games and Entertainment studio that is based in Montreal and led by Sébastien Puel […] our priority will be on integrating the team from Typhoon Studios into Stadia Games and Entertainment.

The announcement although eye opening on the choice of development team, does not really come as a surprise. It was expected that Google would eventually pick up more hands to work on the platform’s exclusive lineup, even before Stadia’s former alias ‘Project Stream’, unearthing codename Project Yeti in June 2018 disclosed that Google would go to the extents of purchasing teams in an attempt to form a strong catalogue of projects to advertise the at the time Google gaming console.

Essentially, this is decision was mainly pursued by the publisher’s head, Jade Raymonds. Reflecting on her experience with both Ubisoft and later at Electronic Arts before being prompted to join Google later on in May of this year, she has showed to hold plenty of wisdom concerning the gaming industry. Additionally, Typhoon Games initially formed from other former EA and Ubisoft veterans, so her history with prior companies could also be what swayed to adopting the studio.

Raymond in the press release shares that development for Typhoon Games’ first project will still go as planned leading up to the title’s release next year. It is speculated that this purchase will later lead to a Stadia port of Journey to the Savage Planet following the initial launch.

Journey to the Savage Planet is listed to release on January 28, 2020 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC via Epic Games Store.
