Super Mega Baseball Developer Metalhead Software Acquired By Electronic Arts

Currently, MLB the Show 21 continues to still surprise many players that log into the game; especially on Xbox. In that, the game series that was once unique to PlayStation systems is now available on Microsoft’s console. Even more, this year’s annual installment launched on its first day with simultaneous Xbox Game Pass support as well.

However, it should be reminded of the games that stood in the place of the vacancy for big budget baseball titles: in particular, Metalhead Software’s Super Mega Baseball. While not entirely an authentic baseball simulator, the game does hold its own charm and some nostalgia to Backyard Baseball fans. Nearly a year ago Super Mega Baseball 3 launched for major platforms with cross-play enabled.

According to a press release from Electronic Arts on Wednesday, the publisher announced a full-on acquisition of Metalhead Software to bring a “talented sports development team and baseball franchise to EA SPORTS.”

We’re all players of Super Mega Baseball, and we’ve long admired the work of the Metalhead team. It’s a unique and beloved franchise among sports gamers – the balance and depth of gameplay, and the unique style of the content, makes it super fun to play with friends.

We look forward to supporting and investing in the team so they can continue to build out more amazing games that delight sports fans around the world. EA SPORTS continues to expand, and we’re deeply excited to create more unique and interactive experiences that blur the lines between sports and entertainment.

Cam Weber, EA Sports Executive Vice President and General Manager

“Our team has worked hard over the years to refine a formula that uniquely mixes an arcade style with deep on-field gameplay and innovative co-operative and competitive multiplayer experiences,” Scott Drader, Metalhead Software co-founder said. “In this next chapter, we’re excited to leverage EA’s power and reach to bring our titles to a broader audience and to take some ambitious next steps in the development of our future titles.”

Electronic Arts for more than a handful of years has retouched on Major League Baseball titles. The last entries being MVP: NCAA Baseball releases in 2006 & 2007. However, the firm did release MVP Baseball Online which released uniquely in South Korea back in 2012 until 2014.

As for other returning sports titles, Electronic Arts is currently working on bringing college football back to the frontlines. Additionally, there is also the planned PGA Tour that recently scored an exclusive contract with The Masters tournament for the new series. You can read the full report by heading here.
