The concept of development freedom is a topic that many video game studios hope to achieve at some point with financial stability and ownership of their prior-released properties. For development teams like PlatniumGames for instance who has recently begun pursuing the trade of self-publishing in conjunction to a capital investment made by Chinese technology firm Tencent Holdings.
In light of the Japanese studio being given the opportunity, the same might be on the horizon for German game developer Yager Development. It was revealed this past week that the game studio received an investment from the same Tencent Holdings based in the Chinese providence.
On the matters of this new agreement made between both parties, Yager Development CEO Timo Ullmann had to say this:
“We’re humbled to join the line-up of Tencent partners which reads like a games industry Who’s Who,” Ulmann in response to the new investment in Yager. “We’re confident that this will greatly enhance the scope of our business, not just by getting access to Tencent’s network and resources but by tapping the vast industry know-how Tencent possesses.”
Expanding on the opportunities that will open for Yager Development, staying independent is surely one advantage to this investment. Additional positives from this also segue to continued development for the 2019-released, online-only PvPvE The Cycle. Seeing that the title has just begun to pick up following its debut on the Epic Games Store this past August, there is surely plenty of potential for the title to pick up later in the coming future.
Atop of continued support assured for current titles from the developer, this will also lead way towards potential new IPs as well. Yager Development previously worked on the still upcoming Dead Island 2 until 2015 as Sumo Digital took the helm for development; it is suspected that the studio has went to work on other projects in the midst of departing from the Deep Silver-owned series.
What do you think will come from this announcement?
