Tencent Opens New Los Angeles Studio Focused On Next-Generation, AAA Titles

As of recent with Tencent’s financial endeavors, the firm has shown interest in tapping into the western market with unique properties of its own offered outside of its eastern home turf. In that, the Chinese company best illustrate its ambitions with the recent capital investment for Japanese developer, Marvelous back in May.

In that, Tencent emphasized that the aim for the firm to enter the global market would be through Marvelous that would essentially pose as the catalyst for the company’s approach. Simultaneously, this would also benefit Tencent by developing projects with Japanese studios since the group has yet to properly establish teams in the respected market at the time. Marvelous would also face some benefits as well with more properties available for potential releases outside of Japan also.

Now in a new report, Tencent will be establishing a new team on American soil. As part of the subsidiary studio Lightspeed & Quantum (PUBG Mobile studio), Tencent has founded Lightspeed LA which will be posted in Orange County, California. Even more, the lead employee at Lightspeed LA will be a former Rockstar Games veteran, Steve Martin.

Atop of Tencent’s projected endeavor to make it for more western releases, the newly founded studio will also be on the front lines for development of next-generation projects as well. Martin shares that Lightspeed LA will be working on an AAA project intended for the coming Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

Although the studio’s identity was shared today, Martin reveals that recruiting for Lightspeed LA has already been successful. Moreover, Martin spares that talent from 2K Games, Insomniac Games, Respawn Entertainment, and Rockstar Games has been welcomed aboard for his new team in California. As for the respected project that will be underway from the team, it was left out on the approach the team will follow for its first title.
