Looking at the Nintendo Switch, many owners including myself would look at the device as a reason to replay or experience new titles from titles that were exclusively available on the previous GameBoy or other portable devices. And while waiting for a port of some sort is the only option aside from owning the actual game to play, there is a new alternative just on the horizon.

It was announced this week from Analogue that a new device will give fans of portable gaming the option to replay said games via the Analogue Pocket. This new handheld is said to not only allow players to enjoy the games from before on the original GameBoy as well as the following iterations alongside the Atari Lynx, NEO Geo Pocket Color, and Sega Game Gear.

In partnership with Kenyon Weston based in the U.K., Analogue does what the original handhelds did and reinvigorated the same foundation for today’s standards. Such as making the Pocket’s screen resolution about 10x higher than the original GameBoy (1600x1440p). Other finer details for current expectations is that the device is rechargeable with the use of a USB-C cable for the highest quality to be given to the user.

Even fancying some of the traits that make he Nintendo Switch unique is that the Analogue Pocket is also equipped with a dock which can stream the game you are playing to a wider format television via HDMI. The device is also provided with an installed Nanoloop app; a synthesizer & sequencer that is primarily used for creating sound chips similarly used for the GameBoy.

The base model for the Pocket is advertised to play the slew of GameBoy cartridges scaling from the original handheld along with the GameBoy Color, and GameBoy Advanced. However, to play the cartridges for the other advertised handhelds, the Pocket’s webpage states “ Cartridge adapters required for Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Atari Lynx [ Sold Separately ].”

Looking ahead into 2020, the Pocket alongside the previously announced Panic PlayDate will bring exciting times for reflecting portable gaming fans. You can read my full hands-on impression of the PlayDate by going here.

The Analogue Pocket is projected for a 2020 release for $199.99: the dock for the device is also said to release next year, but has yet to be given a price.
