Regarding the current stance on the Gears of War franchise, first-party developer The Coalition has been running the show for the series that Epic Games initially kicked off for the Xbox platform back in 2006 with the first titular entry. Following the release of Gears of War: Judgment in 2013, the series looked to be reaching an end. That was until former Epic Games Executive Producer Rod Fergusson established The Coalition following Microsoft’s acquisition of the Gears of War brand from Epic Games.
Since then, Fergusson has been branded as the leading individual who has drove the IP to be one of the most recognized series on the Xbox platform settling into the next generation of hardware with Gears of War 4 and the latest Gears 5. Even going by the alias on Twitter @GearsViking, Fergusson truly stood as the definitive person behind the entire series.
Through a surprise reveal he made on Twitter earlier today, Fergusson has shared that he will be leaving The Coalition after leading the studio since 2014. He tells to be departing from the team to helm the Diablo series at Blizzard Entertainment.%
The soon to be former Coalition head adds on to be officially leaving his post at the game studio next month. Regarding what operation he will be responsible for over at Blizzard, it looks that Fergusson will be in charge of the already-announced Diablo IV. The game showcased at Blizzcon in November illustrates to be a well-requested successor to the preceding Diablo II.
This week now marks two monumental characters that will be leaving their acting roles at big budget developers. Just yesterday, Rockstar Games’ co-founder Dan Houser was confirmed to be departing from his position at the company after helming the team since its founding two decades ago. I highly recommend you read our full review for Gears 5 when possible: this being the last project of Fergusson’s at The Coalition, if you are not familiar with the title, you should start now. Rectify Gaming’s David Rodriguez receives Gears 5 to hone “ambition and bold direction breathes new life into old legends.”
The Coalition nor Xbox Game Studios has disclosed who will be taking over for Fergusson following his departure later on in March.
