Although developer The Coalition did ship Gears 5 back in September 2019, the wait for the next installment in the franchise release for the latest Xbox Series X & Xbox Series S hardware will be longer than hoped. That is due to the team’s decision to transition to Unreal Engine 5 already. With that, the team confirmed new announcements will be on the back burner until further noticed as it starts working on the next Epic Games iteration.
Of course, the coming proprietary engine is still on the way as the video game development suite is still not available. More specifically, it is not planned to ship until 2022 as of this past May. But, there is something to look forward to from the firm. In that, The Coalition is preparing a technical demonstration with Unreal Engine 5 called ‘Alpha Point’. The test was previously told to be featured at GDC this month.
In a new series of videos shared on Monday, The Coalition presents footage of Alpha Point revealing a glimpse at what the developer has managed to provide thus far since adopting Unreal Engine 5. You can watch the technical demo in the video below:
According to The Coalition’s Studio Technical Director Kate Rayner, the first-party team for Xbox is collaborating with Epic Games for Unreal Engine 5 to optimize the platform for the next-generation of system hardware. “For us, this is about a foundation for the next generation of games at The Coalition. This is also about ensuring the Engine is optimized and that we can push Generation 9 Xbox Series X and S and high-end PC modern graphics to the greatest level possible.
“We’ve been really excited with Unreal Engine 5 so far, both with what we can achieve visually, as well as what it can do to empower our artists and our workflows. However, it’s still really early. For us, this is a great opportunity for us to kick the tires provide feedback to Epic, and work closely, collaborating with them to ensure the Engine is optimized for Generation 9, optimized for Xbox and Microsoft platforms, and meets the needs that we have for our internal titles.”
The Coalition happens to not be the only team working on an unnamed project with Unreal Engine 5. Previously, it was learned from a job listing at InXile Entertainment that the developer is working on a new, next-generation project with the Epic Games suite.
