The 1990s doesn’t seem to be getting a lot of love it deserves: the decade of economic prosperity, the Chicago Bulls, the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, the N64, and the original PlayStation, just to name a few. But if you did grow up during that era, you know that your after-school afternoon wasn’t complete without Disney Afternoon. The two-hour syndicated program provided some of the best entertainment from Disney animation.
And, of course, when you have successful franchises, you have video games spin-offs. Fortunately, Capcom and Disney have a very strong relationship and they were able to make some of the most successful 8-bit games during that era. It is fitting that Capcom has released The Disney Afternoon Collection today for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC; it is not yet known if it will get a Nintendo release, which is a bit ironic since those games originally came out only for Nintendo. The games included are:
- DuckTales
- DuckTales 2
- Rescue Rangers
- Rescue Rangers 2
- TaleSpin
- Darkwing Duck
There were other shows from Disney afternoon such as Gummi Bears, Gargoyles, and Goof Troop (to name a few), but they did not get the same treatment as the titles above. Actually, Capcom did release Goof Troop for the Super Nintendo and Disney Interactive released Gargoyles for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive; again, they were not selected for The Disney Afternoon Collection.
Still, like Mega Man Legacy Collection (from Capcom, no less), it has Boss Rush and Time Attack features. New is the “rewind” feature in which you can go back and play where you blundered, like Braid.
The Disney Afternoon Collection is out for $19.99
Oh, and don’t forget to sing the theme song while you’re at it.
