For 2024, The Game Awards faces new heights as it marks ten years since the first airing of the awards show for the gaming industry. A decade later, more & more viewers tune into the show with Geoff Keighley presenting the most definitive release of the year. Coming this December, fans are expecting this to be the biggest yet. However, there is some scrutiny for how this year’s show is being handled.
In that, Keighley did confirm that expansions & DLC will be eligible for nominations. And, we saw this once the list went live. This is mainly due to Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree being among the nominees including Game of the Year. What is also expected for The Game Awards is its event in Fortnite. Last year, 2023 introduced in-game voting for The Game Awards which virtualized Geoff Keighley as well.
This week, Keighley reveals that he alongside The Game Awards are returning to Fortnite. Even more, Epic Games does go into depth on the technology behind this year’s arrangement with the awards host being transformed into a MetaHuman. You can watch the new trailer in the video below:
“I saw Epic’s announcement of MetaHumans in UEFN earlier this year and thought it would be incredible to see what was possible around The Game Awards. I spent a full day at 3Lateral in Manchester, England to get scanned as a MetaHuman. You sit in a scanner and do tons of different face poses, then they scan your body too. The results speak for themselves, I truly feel like I have a digital double!” Keighley explains.
Additionally, he also elaborates on the inspiration for this new trend for The Game Awards being in Fortnite as he explains the continued interest that Epic Games has cultivated in making Fortnite a wider platform than just battle royale. “As we celebrate a decade of TGA, The Game Awards Vote in Fortnite hints at some of the possibilities for our next decade.”
He Continues: “Back in 2019, I hosted the Live at Risky Reels event with J.J. Abrams around Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. That event made me see Fortnite as a new platform for programming and content. Over the next decade we are going to push on how to use games and game engines as a venue to gather and celebrate this medium—what you’re seeing today is just a prototype and hint of where TGA will go in the next decade. Imagine a day when we can announce a new game, and then the screen opens and you can actually jump into that game to play a quick demo!”
