Remarking on the initial release for The Last of Us Part II back in June 2020, the game’s future stood to be mixed following the controversy that ensued upon getting into player’s hands. While critics continued to praise the sequel for its ambitious continuation of the first 2013 title, the fans that loved the predecessor harbored a large majority were left with a sour taste in their mouth from the overall execution.
Despite what was said by outlets and on social media, the numbers racked in by Naughty Dog was astronomical to say the least. In the first three days of release, The Last of Us Part II shipped four million copies. Then upon concluding 2020, the follow-up also received the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards which many were on their seats to see other titles like Ghost of Tsushima and Final Fantasy VII Remake be awarded.
Now that we are well-acquainted with 2021, the final results from majority of media outlets and player choice nomination already were awarded – leaving The Last of Us Part II to be the next most awarded video game in history. The game now shatters the record held by CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt which stood at 260 awards.
Hopping on over to Gameawards.net, it is revealed that The Last of Us Part II now sits at 261 awards which crowns it the most awarded title in the history of the industry. The awards is divided up between 170 nominated by media outlets and the remaining 91 nominations handed by player choice.
While what was to come for The Last of Us Part II did look to be uneventful compared to its predecessor, the game proved to push even higher boundaries in the long run.
