The Sega Dreamcast Mini plans dropped due to cost

A few years ago the mini versions of classic consoles like the SNES, NES, Sega Genesis, and PS1 were released. Fans have wanted a Sega Dreamcast and Sega Saturn mini console and it turns out the company had planned it, but it was too costly to make it happen.

YouTuber, Adam Koralik recently released a video talking about this topic. Adam said he was working with Sega for a little while around the time of the Shenmue re-release. The company were doing a bunch of digital Dreamcast re-releases at the time and picked Adam’s brain saying “what do you think of the idea of doing it that way (re-releases) as opposed to like a mini box”.

What’s the issue with the mini version? “They were like the problem honestly is that basically if we want to release it as a console, it’s going to be like 300 bucks” The reason for a $300 mini Dreamcast is because they would need to put real hardware and the technology was just not cheap enough at that time.

Consumers would expect a Sega Dreamcast mini or Saturn to be $100 just like all the other mini’s that released previously. They suggested to do PC conversions of the Dreamcast games instead of a mini console.

You can catch Adam Koralik talking about this subject at 12:32 of the video.
