Austrian publisher THQ Nordic has gain the reputation for the constant acquisitions of major game studios and intellectual properties for the past two years. And it’s no surprise that the firm is back once again with yet another surprising purchase, Tarsier Studios. Just earlier in December, it was reported that the publisher acquired the development team with a transaction of nearly 11 million dollars.
Rather than a straight acquisition, the company did so through a split purchase with $9.34 million and paying the remaining with $1.17 million in B-shares which comes to $10.5 million in total. More specifically, the acquisition was carried out by the Embracer Group, who owns THQ Nordic and parent company Koch Media.
More so, this new deal will still support the 65 employees under Tarsier Studios alongside providing the publishing rights to the buying party, which will then fall unto THQ Nordic, of course. Although the purchase was made to be chartered as the same-owned entity, the Swedish developer will be “autonomous” alongside previously acquired investment firm Goodbye Kansas.
To clear some confusion upon the ownership of some projects previously shipped by Taisier Studios, possession for some properties still lie along their initial publisher: Little Nightmares belonging to Bandai Namco and Stretchers to still be owned by Nintendo. However, 2017 released VR title Statik will now be transferred to Embracer Group due to the recent acquisition.
Tarsier Studios announced previously this past August at Gamescom that the team has begun development on the second installment for the Little Nightmares title. You can read the full report by heading here.
Do you think THQ Nordic/Embracer Group will stop here in acquisitions leading into the New Year?
