Over the course of these past few years, live-service games while lacking a single-player campaign has proven to be flowing with imbedded lore and background storytelling just awaiting to be revealed. Properties such as League of Legends has proven this and expanded into transmedia with series like Arcane in the past to properly expand the universe into the mainstream.
Additionally, many fans were hoping the same to come to other prominent franchises. In the past, it was suspected that Apex Legends could potentially find this same fate as the storyline is an extension of the already expansive Titanfall universe. Even more, Overwatch fans have anticipated similar treatment with the game’s inception in 2016 and even some job listings for animated series were discovered previously too.
Well this week, Blizzard Entertainment revealed that a new prequel animated series ‘Overwatch: Genesis’ is happening. In fact, this new mini-series kicks off this Thursday with Part One: Dawn scheduled to air. You can watch the trailer in the video below:
The new animated story arc for Overwatch comes at a surprise with fans eager to see how the story expands prior to the events of the game. But, the mini-series will only consist of three episodes with short runtimes. Episode 1 is to only be 5:13 mins. Scheduling reveals Part Two: Innocence airs on July 13th with a 6:34 mins runtime and Part Three: Rebirth arrives on July 20th with a runtime of 6:58 mins.
“It was a technological golden age. Until it wasn’t,” the brief synopsis reads for the first part. It appears that Dawn will explore the beginning of the omnics revolt as humanity was close to reaching its near-utopia status. The following parts will continue this storytelling and expand on the events following and possibly give background for prominent characters before the first game.
