Publisher Ubisoft has proven to really bridge the idea of open-world titles with projects focused on cooperative play and even dabbled into PvP aspects for said games. And while games like Ghost Recon Breakpoint and The Division 2 do offer players to play competitively, they are still limited due to the respected platform for which the hosted player is using. However, the company is looking to fully imbed cross-play into these titles according to their most recent earnings report.
In the financial documentation provided from Ubisoft, publisher CEO Yves Guillemot emphasizes on the next step that the company looks to pursue regarding interactive online play.
Our goal is to put cross-play on all the PvP games we have, over time. That’s well on the way.
Looking at current games that have adopted cross platform play like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, this number is expected to pick up looking towards the new line up of console unites from Microsoft and Sony next year. Noted, Ubisoft has already implemented this for one of their titles, Brawlhalla. Another being the latest iteration of Just Dance series, this only proves to be the start for the publisher.
On what games exactly, players could of course look towards the active Rainbow Six Siege and even tactical melee sim For Honor. Then later down the line later in 2020 and branching into next generation hardware, titles like Rainbow Six Quarantine and potentially Watch Dogs: Legion could also be added to this initiative. Former Watch Dogs titles do not primarily host PvP-centered matchmaking, but that could change with the newest installment. Same could be said for Gods & Monsters which is also on that list, but little to no information has yet been shared on the upcoming IP.
Are there any games you would like to see offer cross-play under Ubisoft’s belt?
