For roughly a decade, Watch Dogs stands in a unique position for Ubisoft. After stranding off from a pitch for Driver, the series evolved into a three-installment franchise. However, the game still stands with only ‘Legion’ being its last installment dated back to 2020. In one report from a familiar leaker, Ubisoft is outright shelving the series especially after the latest game’s performance.
What makes the situation even more interesting is the decisions Ubisoft is pursuing for Watch Dogs if the claims on the IP does happen to be true. In that, the publisher is laying out the roadwork for a live-action film. From what is understood, the motion picture will be a set within the branched universe of the games, but is left unclear if it will be a direct adaptation of the inaugural release.
In a new development from Deadline which initially reported on the Watch Dogs movie, a new update has surfaced on the production. At the time, it was indicated that Sophie Wilde (Talk To Me) is to star in the video game film. Now, Wilde’s role has been cemented alongside Tom Blyth (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes).
Other updates on the production includes the writer for the film, Christie LeBlanc (Oxygen). It’s been reported that the script was then revised by Victoria Bata (Lessons in Chemistry). Deadline also added that Ubisoft Film & Television head of content Margaret Boykin is now attached to the production with the title of producer.
Perhaps a clearer picture will be painted by Ubisoft with a proper announcement later this month. On June 10th, Ubisoft is to host its own ‘Ubisoft Forward’ presentation where new reveals & premieres take place. You can read the full report by heading here.
