Next year in 2022 will mark the two decade anniversary since the initial launch of Shantae. Currently, the titular half-genie hero just this past May shipped her fifth game, Shantae and the Seven Sirens. But while the newest game is its most relevant entry as of writing, developer WayForward appears to be refocusing on the classic 2002 Game Boy Color title.
In a new announcement this past week, WayForward revealed that Shantae is making a comeback in mid April. The inaugural release will be receiving a dedicated port to the Nintendo Switch. You can watch the announcement trailer in the video below:
“Initially launched in 2002, Shantae is the acclaimed action-adventure-platformer that is often considered one of the most impressive Game Boy Color games ever produced,” the trailer’s description reads. “This pixel-perfect adaptation, Shantae hair-whips, dances, and transforms as she seeks out four elemental stones throughout Sequin Land to put a stop to the nefarious lady pirate, Risky Boots!”
However, what makes this version of Shantae most unique is the ability to swap the different Game Boy iterations. In that, players will be given the choice to play Shantae intended for either the Game Boy Color or the Game Boy Advanced. Evidently, there is a difference in animation and sprite work that makes playing both a different experience.
