What Is Sega/Sonic Team Cooking With New Trademark ‘Sonic Blitz’?

The state for Sonic the Hedgehog is in a very good place currently with its recent release, Sonic x Shadow Generations. “Sonic X Shadow Generations is a strong dual game experience that marries nostalgia with innovation. […] There’s still plenty of life left in Sega’s iconic mascot and his edgy counterpart,” Rectify Gaming’s review for the game reads. Previously, fans were convinced one project on the way is a remake for Sonic Heroes as hints were slipped in prior promotions.

Of course, there is the sequel to Sonic Frontiers where game director Morio Kishimoto has shared open ears to what can make the next game better. Additionally, Sonic Team studio head Takashi Iizuka has pressed on an RPG experience at some point too. “I’d like to hopefully work on a Sonic RPG at some point before I retire from Sega,” he stated.

Recently, Sega did just trademark a new Sonic the Hedgehog project that has yet to be properly announced – Sonic Blitz. Identified by Gematsu, the filing was issued on January 29th in Japan which does illustrate that momentum is just picking up. Howbeit, little surrounding what this new game will be has been gathered thus far.

Although in the same vein the title ‘Sonic Blitz’ does share some parallel to the separate free-to-play title Sonic Rumble. However, X user @GamesCage_ has uncovered what could potentially be the new project. In a job listing posted by Sega, the posting reads: “We are looking for 3D battle action game development staff!” the header in the application guideline reads,

More interesting is that the user also pieced together the job posting is for Sega 2nd Development Vision which is synonymous with being where Sonic Team resides. Another eye-opener is the tools that could be used for this new project. The job listing asks for “basic knowledge of Unreal Engine” which implies to not be using the in-house Hedgehog Engine.
