Alike most series or franchises that we enjoy, the creator or the development team always strives to exceed initial expectations by creating new opportunity within the intellectual property. For the sake of the line of Yakuza titles from RGG Studio, we are well-acquainted with the new change that was made with the upcoming Yakuza installment. However, the Director did share that the developer would undo the damage only if fans made it verbally clear about being unsatisfied.

Regardless of this one instance, Toshihiro Nagoshi still has plenty more to experiment when it comes to future entries down the line. According to an interview with 4Gamer, the Director confirms that there are other possibilities to be explored with new titles for the Yakuza series.

Making Ryu Ga Gotoku 7 into an RPG was a big challenge. For the next game, we can keep going with RPG and make something that surpasses it. We can also go back to action. We could also make a hybrid system mixing action and the new RPG system. All of these are possible scenarios.

Elaborating more on the RPG elements that were implemented on the series, Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon strays away from the traditional action-packed experience for a tamer, turn-based approach that older fans did not show to be fond of. Discussing the matter of the combat system, Nagoshi shares this to be most his preferable augmentation to the series.

“Personally speaking, I want to keep going through the same road, and see what we could improve. For example, making the battle system even more enjoyable, by adding new functionalities related to the terrain and the battles’ areas.” Expectations of the coming release later this year despite the unfavored combat system still looks to be a highly-anticipated launch with a slew of returning characters to be featured in Like a Dragon.

The Yakuza series will also be blossoming across other platforms as it was announced that the first few entries of the franchise will arrive on Xbox One later this year. Listing Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 to be arriving to Microsoft’s hardware.

What changes do you think Yakuza is needing for newer games?

Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon is listed for PlayStation 4 to arrive in 2020.
