Yooka-Laylee Could Potentially Break Into Other Genres, Playtonic Games Shares

Developer Playtonic Games showed the studio’s interest to step outside the boundaries for 2017’s Yooka-Laylee as the team has shown with the 2.5D platformer sequel, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. Now that the follow-up as officially launched last week, discussion of more adventurous journeys to expand the IP’s reputation in the gaming market has spawned.

Speaking with 3DJuegos, Playtonic Games co-founders Mark Stevenson and Steve Mayles hint at the team’s viewpoint to bring the Yooka-Laylee universe to other video game genres down the line; mentioning landmark titles such as Mario Kart & Splatoon for reference.

I think we’ll keep working on Yooka Laylee in the future. Really, we could work on any kind of game, a racing game like Mario Kart or a shooter like Splatoon. We’ve never intended Yooka and Laylee to be the protagonists of all of our games. On the future, we could make a spin-off with one of the many characters from Yooka Laylee, like Dr. Quack or Dr. Puzz. Being independent lets us follow whatever way we want and the one we think is right.

The two even expand to the idea of full spin-off installments featuring secondary characters aside from the two starring protagonists. But ultimately the light seems to shine brightest at the possibility of a Yooka-Laylee kart racer to be the next project fans would anticipate the most from Playtonic Games next. Deciding on what is all in theory as the team only discussed what they would like to look at next, not prominently highlighting their next motive at the studio.

Dissecting the notion for a kart racer specifically, the slowly growing number of kart racers have shown to be what the market currently wants: and for Playtonic to throw their own version of the genre into the mix would surely only paint yet another diverse stroke into the already colorful canvas.
