This week, Sony Interactive Entertainment properly announced the PlayStation 5 Pro. Although it was only revealed on Tuesday, many players for the platform were already expecting a mid-generation refresh from the PlayStation firm more than a year prior. And although it only iterates on the 2020 system, this new ‘Pro’ variant offers more than its predecessor.
One of the biggest takeaways from the Technical Presentation is that the PlayStation 5 Pro offers a premium experience. Not only does it offer improvements visually for resolution rendering & raytracing, but also features drastic enhancements to performance as well. Alongside titles for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 games are also said to anticipate updates as well.
In a recent feature by CNET, it is reported that the new PS5 Pro Game Boost will be applicable to more than 50 titles come its release in November. The article also touches on how these enhancements will be supported. Just like the transition to PS5 from last-gen hardware, these updates will not cost players anything. It is also disclosed that the updates will be an effort from both the developer as well as PlayStation to realize.
“I’ve already seen games with three different PS5 Pro modes. As time goes by, particularly for the games which are launching after the hardware releases, we’ll increasingly see a more nuanced approach, where the focus is less on resolution, and much more about higher image quality through a variety of strategies,” head architect Mark Cerny said in the interview.
Similarly, Microsoft has offered similar treatment to its legacy program as well. FPS Boost introduced in the first year of the Xbox Series X|S included upgrades to the original game to perform better across both SKUs. One feat over PlayStation is that the team did not require studio intervention to bring to fruition. This was witnessed with Dark Souls III which received a surprise update in 2021.
According to Digital Foundry, Remedy Entertainment’s Control was another example of this. It was reported that Microsoft diagnosed and resolved a technical limitation for the title at a system level which did not need the developer’s involvement. It was understood other titles that fit that category were also touched up as well. You can read the full report by heading here.
