Although the current PlayStation 5 is hardly four years into its lifecycle, players are interested in the mid-generation refresh that is to come from it. This week, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced a ‘Technical Presentation’ with lead architect Mark Cerny to host the livestream. Gathered from previous reports, the new system is to integrate in-house PSSR features that drastically improve fidelity without sacrificing performance.
Additionally, a glimpse at the system was leaked as well. Dealabs indicated a September reveal alongside a concept for what the new console will look like. As well in the PlayStation 30th anniversary image, a glimpse at the new console was spotted. Although still sporting its tall build, it is now equipped with ribbed sides on both plates for the system.
On Tuesday, Mark Cerny presented the PlayStation 5 Pro revealing its technical overcomings compared to the PlayStation 5. Priced at $699, players can now enjoy a new iteration of Sony’s best console.
PS5 Pro provides gamers with amazing graphics at high frame rates. You can hear Mark Cerny, lead architect for PS5 Pro, discuss the key innovations from PS5 Pro in the following video presentation. This presentation provides a deep dive into the key performance features that make PS5 Pro truly special.
Other enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can apply to more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro. This feature may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games. Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games. PS5 Pro will also launch with the latest wireless technology, Wi-Fi 7, in territories supporting this standard. VRR and 8K gaming are also supported.
Hideaki Nishino, Sony Interactive Entertainment Platform Business Group CEO
“It’s humbling to see how game creators have embraced the latest technology from PS5 Pro, and several games will be patched with free software updates for gamers to take advantage of PS5 Pro’s features. These games can be identified with a PS5 Pro Enhanced label within their title,” Nishino added in the blog post.
“Some games you can look forward to include blockbuster hits from PlayStation Studios and our third-party partners, such as Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more.”
Probably the most interesting is the decision to offer the system solely as a digital console. Although players can purchase a separate disc drive reader, the decision to not offer both does leave more questions than answers. While concerns continue to grow about a digital-only future, the direction PlayStation as well as Xbox are heading does not ease the tension.
