The push by AMD for consoles is no real surprise when both Microsoft & Sony used custom chips for its systems. Since 2020, there has been evident backing by the manufacturer for these platforms like FidelityFX support on Xbox Series X|S. Similarly, we did witness more recently the addition of new FidelityFX Super Resolution3 (FSR3) as well for both Xbox and PlayStation.
Looking ahead, there has already been reports that PlayStation will again be collaborating with AMD for its next console, Reuters reports. But, that is not all that AMD & Sony will be partnering up for. In fact, it was shared by lead PlayStation architect Mark Cerny that both are to collaborate towards new AI integration for improved graphics and performance.
Amid AMD’s investment in its participation with both Xbox & PlayStation, The firm does celebrate a new milestone for the latest console generation. As per its Q4 2024 earnings report, there has been a total of 100 million systems sold by 2024’s end. The past year also witnessed consoles outsell PC as well.
“Semi-custom sales declined as expected as Microsoft and Sony focused on reducing channel inventory. Overall, this console generation has been very strong. Highlighted by cumulative unit shipments surpassing $100 million in the fourth quarter. Looking forward, we believe channel inventories have now normalized and semi-custom sales will return to more historical patterns in 2025,” Lisa T Su, AMD CEO said.
One caveat of this new metric is that there is other hardware left out of the conversation. That is the Steam Deck. Although the most successful of PC portable devices, AMD did not incorporate the device in its total sales for this report. But, the system will have more time to reveal how profitable the Steam Deck is as Valve shared plans for a 2.0 is still years away. You can read the full report by heading here.
