Blumhouse Productions To Open Its Own Video Game Division To Publish Original Horror Titles

Over the past year, Blumhouse Productions has continued to share its interest in the video game industry with its committed pursuit for the Five Nights at Freddy’s project. Despite ongoing issues obtaining a director and establishing middle ground with creator Scott Cawthon, the movie is finally picking up off the ground. In February, filming officially commenced for the live-action picture.

Additionally, it was revealed that both Matthew Lillard (Scooby Doo, Scream) and Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games, The Bee Keeper) were also to be attached as well to the upcoming movie. Not to mention the more recent announcement of its new effort with James Wan’s Atomic Monsters: to adapt Dead by Daylight into a movie as well.

Recently, Blumhouse Productions announced it will be establishing its own video game division under the moniker ‘Blumhouse Games’. The new ambition is said to partner with independent developers to fund original titles with budget under $10 million, Bloody Disgusting reports.

Through my time in the industry, I’ve had the good fortune of working closely with developers to bring their ideas to life. There’s a unique opportunity for horror and genre in the indie game space, and I’m thrilled about teaming up with Blumhouse to meaningfully leverage the company’s brand, reputation, and creative talent.

Zach Wood, Blumhouse Games President

“For some time we have been looking to build out a team to start accessing the growth opportunity in interactive media. When we sat with Zach and Don they articulated an approach that resonated with Blumhouse’s model and we knew it was a perfect place for us to start our push into the interactive space,” Blumhouse Productions president Abhijay Prakash adds.

The new division is to comprise of Zach Wood as president and Don Sechler. Wood is a 25-year industry veteran with his most recent work over at Arkane Studios for Prey DLC ‘Mooncrash’ and the upcoming Xbox Series X|S exclusive Redfall. Sechler previously worked at PlayStation’s publishing division joining ahead of the release of the PlayStation 4 and is responsible for structuring some of the platform’s relationships with third-party developers grossing over $150 million.
