Capcom looks to be dismantling a percentage of its physical media according to a recent share holders meeting. During the annual call, the Japanese publisher disclosed to be aiming to reduce about 10 percent of its tangible products in the coming future. The decision comes as a result from the most recent fiscal year as roughly 80 percent of its gross revenue was generated from digital purchases online.

While the decision to pursue a heavier market for digital products, the firm will not abandon physical products altogether – simply less will be produced essentially. Although this could simply be a trend in the consumer market, the direction it is heading in does not look to simmer down anytime soon according to Capcom.

While it ultimately depends on how our customers behave going forward, for the time being we are promoting our digital strategy with an objective of 90%, since there are some customers who prefer to own discs. We aim to continue expanding our business performance by maximizing the benefits of digital sales, which include being able to provide our content both for longer periods of time and throughout the world.

Prior to the report the year before, the recordings for digital sales were more than half of what was recorded. During the Age of COVID-19 currently, followers speculate that the pandemic played a very large roles in the current percentage of consumers buying digital media. However, Nike Partners’ David Ahmad clarifies the trend was already in place since the report was collectively recorded from April 2019 to March 2020.

Ahmad reassures that despite the industry entering a new generation of hardware later this year – physical gaming will not be a thing of the past. “Capcom is certainly on the high end of the spectrum when it comes to the percentage of console game sales that are full game downloads,” Ahmad writes. He also clarifies that this also played a big role in the announcement for the alternative PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.

Looking ahead, Capcom has shared that “multiple titles” from the publisher will ship leading into 2021. So this trend will surely effect products that will be releasing as the new projects will ship uniquely for next-generation consoles. Those projects include Resident Evil 8: Village and Pragmata.

What are your thoughts on Capcom’s decision for more digital efforts?
