As we can gather from entering the first week of September, it will not be very long until the next wave of console hardware ships from both Microsoft and Sony. And taken that both firms are looking to further the experience on both platforms in extremely unique ways, publishers are also making moves for this coming transition as well. In that, game could finally be facing a larger price tag when the new systems ship commercially.
Previously, 2K parent company Take-Two Interactive spared that the new pricing on its properties for the more capable units is justified as long as the content of the respected title exceeds those requirements. Firm CEO Strauss Zelnick told gamesindustry.biz that “when you’re delivering extraordinary quality [in your title]”, it is completely valid for a higher price to market the game.
Howbeit, other firms do not seem to share the same opinion. This being shared by CD Projekt Red where it confirms that the price tag for Cyberpunk 2077 on the newest hardware will not receive a price bump. During a recent Q&A call, the firm discloses its ambitions to hike its pricing for the November-slated project will be mute unlike other publishers.
In terms of EUR, 69.99 has actually been the full SRP (Suggested Retail Price) for the current generation already, for Xbox One, so yes, you should expect that the price is going to be priced around that marker in the Eurozone.
When it comes to USD, we launched our preorders at 60 USD and of course we’re going to keep that price for the consumers. We’re not going to change it at the last minute to 70 USD.
Michal Nowakowski, CD Projekt Red Vice President of Business Development
If the first answer was not enough to convince you, CD Projekt Red in a following question reiterated on its first response to verify that the chance of pricing to increase for Cyberpunk 2077 is not likely – regardless of the economic region. “As I mentioned when answering the previous question, we already announced–a while ago–preorders for our game in the US going at 59.99 and we’re not planning to change that price at the last minute.
“It’s been out in the market and known to consumers for some time. In Europe, the game has been marketed by quite a few retailers for quite a while as well, so, in other words, we’re not planning to change where we are at the last minute for the consumers.” Howbeit, the discussion only reflects its plans for the approaching title and does not directly imply the same will be accounted for future entries.
In a similar stance, the same can also be said for Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Back in July, the publisher was reported to be selling the October release at its standard $59.99 price tag for both current and next-generation consoles. But, the firm also told that its focus currently emphasizes on the “Christmas releases” and implies that pricing could be hiked in 2021. You can read the full report by heading here.
