It was earlier this month that many fans were met with disappointment to discover that Control would not be supporting cross-buy for the next-generation consoles. Gathered from the announcement for Control: Ultimate Edition – a bundle including the base game and all of its additional content – the newer iteration would be the only option to play the 2019-shipped title on either system coming from Microsoft or Sony this holiday.
Howbeit, it was not long until Remedy Entertainment themselves had to clarify on matters as the topic drew quite a bit of attention on the internet since its conception. In a new blog post, the Finnish developer verified that the base game will not be present on the respected retailers for Xbox Series X & PlayStation 5, only the Ultimate Edition of the game will be present on newer hardware. The expansions alongside season pass will both be absent as well.
But despite this oddity for these attributed for Control to be missing, including the game itself, Remedy Entertainment went to reassure that the current-generation version of the title is playable on the newer systems. That being through backwards compatibility, fans can access the base game alongside its respected add-ons through the feature.
Will I be able to purchase the Control base game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, without the additional content?
No. The only version of Control available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will be Control Ultimate Edition.
However, if you have the Control base game, the Expansion Packs or the Season Pass on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One in your collection, you will still be able to play 100% of your game and enjoy an enhanced experience through backwards compatibility.
In addition to the clarified explanation for Control on the newer console arriving later this year, the firm also discloses that backwards compatible support for the game will be available the first day the game arrives to next-gen. “Owners of the original edition of Control on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One can enjoy backwards compatibility when next gen systems launch.”
Taken from the wording of the original statement, it might simply be a mistake on behalf of Remedy Entertainment and/or publisher 505 Games. With the firm previously announcing a next-generation version is underway, the presumption of cross-buy was on the mind for many followers. But for the taboo approach for the title to the coming systems, it is understandable as to how the situation swelled up.
Elsewhere recently following the announcement of Control’s second expansion AWE, Remedy Entertainment Lead Writer Sam Lake disclosed that the add-on will bridge the game with Alan Wake. Even more, this opens the possibility for a new entry to also be doing the same later on. You can read the full report on the Remedy Connected Universe by heading here.
