Reversing back to this past February, Electronic Arts issued an announcement which disclosed that former Need for Speed developer Criterion Games will be helming the racing franchise once again after the series was donned by Ghost Games for this generation’s handful of releases. Now, the team has emerged to share some exciting news regarding the future of the prolific racing series.

In a new blog post, Criterion Games announced to already be working on the next mainline installment for the Need for Speed series. But before we can speculate what this unnamed title will be, it should be noted that no prominent details have been spared as of yet regarding the new game currently.

I wanted to let you all know how excited our team here in Guildford is to be back in the driver’s seat of development for Need for Speed. As you’ll know we have real history with racing and with Need for Speed. We’re focused on bringing Criterion’s unique point of view, unparalleled game feel, and high quality innovations that will chart a new future for this wonderful series of games.

Additionally, Criterion Games also announces that the final waves of updates and patches will be making its waves to the currently ongoing Need for Speed Heat in the coming week in anticipation for the new project. The British developer also mentions to keep an eye out for more Need for Speed news directed at the now-delayed EA Play Online which will take place on June 18.

Criterion Games has been absent from the Need for Speed franchise since 2013 as the team assisted with Ghost Games with Need for Speed Rivals. However, the team’s involvement with the motor racing franchise delves as far back into its lineage with spiritual reboot Need for Speed Hot Pursuit back in 2010.

Elsewhere recently, Need for Speed Heat made its addition to Steam alongside other anticipated titles from Electronic Arts diverse repertoire. You can read the full list by heading here.

What do you hope to see be done with Criterion Games returning to helm the Need for Speed franchise?
