For those that might not have checked their phones this morning, THQ Nordic parent company Embracer Group announced to be establishing a formal merge with Borderlands developer Gearbox Entertainment. While not outright acquiring the Texas-based studio, the firms will now be collaborating on new endeavors following the forwarding of the agreement. The transaction is said to run about $363 million and $175 million in company shares.
As part of Gearbox Entertainment being welcomed as the seventh subsidiary team to reside under Embracer Group, what the future will bring next is left uncertain. It is justified to believe that current properties the studio is most recognized for will be left with no direction following the deal, however, 2K goes on to clarify that is not the case in reality.
In an update from gamesindustry.biz, the publisher shared a statement with the publication to issue that its endeavors with Gearbox, mainly Borderlands, will proceed following the arrangement with Embracer Group on Wednesday.
As the proud publisher of the Borderlands franchise, we are happy for our partners at Gearbox and this exciting new chapter for their organization.
The merger does not change 2K’s relationship with Gearbox nor our role as the publisher for the Borderlands IP or any other projects we are currently working on with the studio. We look forward to continuing our long-term partnership with this incredibly talented team and delivering many more exciting entertainment experiences to gaming fans around the world.
Believe it or not, but this is less surprising following the previous arrangement that Embracer Group established in the past. In that, the Swedish holdings firm shared to be fully acquiring Saber Interactive. However, the team while now under the jurisdiction of the conglomerate is still operating with 2K on its coming projects.
More exciting is what the American developer will offer now under the new banner. As of May 2020, Embracer Group is told to harbor 110+ titles in development and 69 of those, at the time, were unannounced. So somewhere in that, Saber Interactive is working on a project internally. Are you happy Borderlands is still preserved following the merge?
