Upon reflecting on the Serious Sam franchise, developer Croteam alongside publisher Devolver Digital cooperated in bringing now four mainline installments to the series. Starting with the third entry Serious Sam 3: BFE back in 2011 to the latest Serious Sam 4 which arrived this year among other collaborated projects – all titles were executed from the relationship of both firms.

So it hardly comes as a surprise when the independent game publisher announced to be acquiring Croteam. The biggest surprise honestly is how long the firms were partnered before legal acquisition was made for the Croatia-based studio. This week, Devolver Digital shared to be purchasing Croteam in anticipation for the two celebrating nearly a decade of its partnership.

Since then Croteam and Devolver Digital have partnered on dozens of games – from the frantic Serious Sam series to the award-winning The Talos Principle across PC, consoles, VR and mobile platforms. Croteam and Devolver Digital have been dating for so long that we decided to go ahead and just get married.

Devolver has acquired Croteam…or maybe Croteam has acquired Devolver…who could really know at this point in the relationship. What’s certain is that our future together is ultra exciting with new projects like The Talos Principle 2, more Serious Sam games, and original IP from Croteam and the Croteam Incubator studios. Croteam will of course keep total creative freedom and Devolver Digital gets to keep making dumb recommendations that Croteam just ignores – we prefer it that way.

Looking forward, it is expected that franchises like the mentioned Serious Sam and The Talos Principle alongside other unannounced projects will certainly materialize from the new acquisition. For now, the main prospect is awaiting for Serious Sam 4 to hit current-gen consoles next year, which the team shared earlier this summer.
