In just a little over a month, the next highly-anticipated Battlefield game has been revealed and addressed plenty of the game’s plans when it releases next fall. In that, Battlefield 2042 will push the envelope of the series with larger maps and player lobbies to enact the most immersive experience to date for the series. Even with the inclusion of climate catastrophes, the first-person shooter leads forward in bringing new life to the genre.
Atop of that, developer DICE also presses on the matters of how it will operate when the game launches later on this year. In that, the 128-player lobbies that was advertised for Battlefield 2042 will operate different than prior games: the team will be adding bots to fill empty spots. At the time, it was taken that is due to the lack of cross-platform play for the franchise. However, the team on Wednesday shares that it is offering the feature now.
According to an extended blog post from the game studio, cross-platform play alongside cross-platform progression are both confirmed for Battlefield 2042. Namely, the feature is broken up into two categories: Xbox One & PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC. DICE goes on to reassure PC users can opt-out for cross-play with the newer consoles if desired.
We are still building cross-play functionality, and the first opportunity for us to test it with a wider, invite-only group will be within the Technical Playtest. Right now, we’d like to give you an understanding of what we’re looking to achieve as final functionality beyond the Technical Playtest.
As mentioned, a technical playtest will be arriving in the coming weeks. However, DICE tells that the closed beta will be available for only owners of the latest console hardware atop of PC.” We’ll test a subset of cross-play functionality during the Technical Playtest. This means during this test, PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation® 5 consoles will be able to test playing together.”
Elsewhere in the blog post, the team explains its aim for cross-progression as well. Unlike other Electronic Arts titles (FIFA, Madden), player progression is transparent to any platform. “Alongside cross-play we’re also building cross-progression and cross-commerce for Battlefield 2042, which will be shared across all platforms and travel with you wherever you go. For example, your unlocked progress and purchases in your PlayStation copy of the game will carry over onto the Xbox or PC version, and vice versa*,” the team explains.
