Swedish developer DICE this past week has unloaded a bulk of new information regarding development of current ongoing titles. Games such as 2017’s Star Wars: Battlefront II alongside 2018’s Battlefield V were both announced to discontinue further content updates in replacement with contempt in-game events and XP weekends for the returning player base. As for players eager to that look for a reason to play a DICE-developed game, it is suggested to wait for the next release.
On the matters of why the team is retracting from both games is to put development in full throttle for next year’s Battlefield installment. Back in October, Electronic Arts shared in an financial report that the next release for the series will arrive sometime in 2021 or potentially a 2022 release.
Reported by GameSpot, DICE on the discussion of the unannounced game tells that the next entry will be “targeting new innovation that will be enabled by next-gen platforms.” Exciting at the time with information still developing on next-generation systems, it is expected to hear as much since the game is suspected to arrive well over several months after the new consoles release.
The claim also happens to corroborate with a separate claim made by Bespin Bulletin on Instagram this week as well. In the post, the recognized Star Wars page shares that DICE departing from further development for Battlefront II will move onto the next Battlefield title. Even more, the page also discloses EA motive’s Project maverick to arrive the same year as the unannounced Battlefield and Respawn Entertainment’s sequel for Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order to ship later in 2022.
Expanding more on the matter of Electronic Arts-published Star War intellectual properties, Bespin Bulletin tells that the publishing agreement between the publisher and Lucasfilm will expire in 2023. Concerned about the future of pre-existing franchises from Electronic Arts’ studios, the Instagram page is convinced that development will not pick up for Battlefront III in the latter of this decade; hypothetically guessing a release for 2024/2025 if the project is greenlit.
Returning the discussion back to Battlefield, the current World War II, first-person shooter was suggested to be expecting more content for the next fiscal year, but now that does not look to be the case as DICE has liquidated further add-on updates to arrive to the most recent Battlefield title. Now Apex Legends will be the only focused shooter from Electronic Arts for the remainder of 2020.
