EA CEO Says Major Overhaul For Apex Legends, “Apex 2.0”, Is Coming After New Battlefield Aimed For Next Year

Currently, the Apex Legends business model is at a crossroads in terms of its current success. While still engaging its users, it is doing so at a massively lower scale than in prior years. However, there is more to come for the series according to publisher Electronic Arts. According to CEO Andrew Wilson, there are plans to expand the game’s universe for higher turnout.

Additionally, Wilson also went on record to say that Apex Legends remains a tentpole IP for the publisher. With live-service generating more than 70 percent of its revenue, steering course for a return to glory for the battle royale is a must. In fact, Wilson in 2024 also stated that there are even plans to break from battle royale for new found success with Apex Legends.

And amid the current plans for Apex Legend’s new found identity still underway, there is a major overhaul set to come in next year. As per the recent FY25 Q3 earnings, Wilson told that this new ‘Apex 2.0’ update is aimed to release sometime in 2026 after the recently teased new Battlefield game underway.

Our expectation is that Apex will be also one of those franchises and that some time on a longer-term time horizon, there will be an even bigger, more meaningful update to that broader game experience and Apex 2.0, if you will. This will not be the final incarnation of Apex. So the team remains incredibly committed. We continue to invest behind the core community who continues to play the numbers in the tens of millions of players.

“We do believe that there should be a more major update that will probably happen after a Battlefield launch just in terms of timing and the team is diligently working through what that would be. And then longer term, our expectation is that we’ll continue to expand what this franchise is and how we support a core community of highly competitive players and new communities that want to come and experience all the greatness that Apex has to offer.”

What is interesting is how Apex Legends has developed into this. While there have been plans to explore Apex Legends as a live-service for more than a decade according to Respawn Entertainment, plans of a “2.0” or sequel was never in the blueprints. Leadership elaborated to follow in similar success to CS:GO. You can read the full report by heading here.
