The talk surrounding Epic Games in recent weeks continues to steer a conversation on where games can reach. For roughly half a decade, Epic Games has duked it out against Apple on the premise of what platform holders can do to creators on their platforms. For a major storefront like App Store, Epic Games pushed back. Nearly five years later, Epic Games won in the courts against the tech conglomerate.
As a result, Fortnite is to officially come back to iOS. At least, that’s the plan. In that, new developments reveal that Apple is blocking Epic Games from updating on its platform for Fortnite to be available for iPhone and other connected devices. But with mobile soon to be behind Epic Games, Tim Sweeney reveals hopes for the next ambition on the horizon for Epic Games Store.
Earlier in May, the Epic Games CEO spoke with GameFile and said that he hopes to see competing storefronts on consoles in the future. He even argues that the execution on Xbox or PlayStation would not end with a lawsuit from the publisher. “I think the world would be a better place if consoles allowed for competing stores, but we haven’t ever seen that as an antitrust dispute-worthy issue,” Sweeney said.
Exploring possibilities, Xbox is a large opportunity that might already be working towards the same end result. Recently in March, leaks surrounding Microsoft revealed that a new UI underway internally lists Steam on the Xbox dashboard. The implementation would link accounts like Steam, Epic Games Store, or possibly even GoG to the Xbox app so you can view your complete library in one environment.
Additionally, Steam is opening its doors for its operating system as well. In January 2025, the firm revealed that in effort to enable more reach for Steam, it is pushing a new effort by licensing SteamOS. The initiative is to expand to more handhelds, but, this could also open doors for other platforms including consoles potentially. You can read the full report by heading here.
