While Microsoft has countless said it is committed to users on its platform, the Xbox company is still adamant on this new push for releasing on hardware outside of its purview. The catalyst for its transparency towards this effort was the ‘This Is An Xbox’ campaign that redefines where you play is on Xbox. Even CEO Satya Nadella shares this ambition from Microsoft will also find new definitions for those that play on its platform too.
So although more games from Xbox will be on both PlayStation & Nintendo systems, the platform of Xbox is to remain. Phil Spencer has went on to argue that leadership at Xbox has no defining ‘red tape’ as for what games will & won’t extend beyond Xbox. What he is adamant about is the ability to entice users through cross-buy initiatives that offers access to your library through multiple avenues.
Speaking to Sacred Symbols, transcribed by Video Game Chronicle, former PlayStation Studios head Shuhei Yoshida has elaborated on the recent actions by Xbox. In the interview, he explains that due to the current climate for Xbox it is “straightforward” as to the decision for this approach by Microsoft. He also deems the move to be a major “win for PlayStation owners” with more titles coming to that platform.
“I think it’s a win for PlayStation owners, they didn’t have access [to those games] before,” he says. “I explained in one interview that it was always my nightmare when I was a managing first-party, I’m lucky it didn’t happen, that if PlayStation became the minority platform, it would be impossible to maintain the first-party development because the best creators would leave. They are not just creatives, they are business people as well, they want their games to reach the biggest audience as well.”
He continues: “It’s very natural if a platform is the minority and if I was able to release a game on the minority platform only, it’s unsustainable. That was the nightmare. Looking at the install base of Xbox hardware, it’s kind of natural to understand what they are doing, and it’s pretty straightforward.”
In the same interview, Yoshida also touches on the now-canceled Factions II live-service from Naughty Dog. Although he praised the builds he tested, the decision for its cancelation comes after comments from Bungie that really stuck with the developer to push for its indefinite galt in development.
