Rewinding back to 2019 a few years back now, it felt like an eternity for Square Enix to deliver on the promise for Kingdom Hearts 3. More than a decade wait since the last mainline installment and roughly half that when initially announced – the game finally made it into the hands of the fans. From our review of the game, we wrote, “Kingdom Hearts 3 has many glaring flaws but makes up for them in ways that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

“Its story is muddled and hard to keep up with, but the characters stick with you and draw out your emotions.” Looking ahead, it appeared Square Enix would keep the franchise on the back burner in anticipation for the 20th anniversary in the future. While other related games were slated to release in 2021, game director Tatsuya Nomura worded the future of the IP to hold more exciting plans.

During the official livestream celebrating two decades of Kingdom Hearts, Square Enix officially announced Kingdom Hearts 4. You can watch the segment of the livestream in the video below:

“In the announcement trailer, Sora makes a triumphant return with an updated look at the beginning of an epic new storyline titled the ‘Lost Master Arc.’ Beginning with Sora facing off in a boss battle against a giant enemy, players are introduced to the Quadratum, a large, expansive city set in a gorgeous, realistic world unlike anything ever seen before in the Kingdom Hearts series.

The press release continues, “Fans will be excited to see the return of Sora’s well-known companions Donald and Goofy, in addition to the first appearance of Strelitzia, a mysterious new character who appears before Sora in this strange new setting.” But, fans did receive a very concentrated fix of Kingdom Hearts last fall as well.

For those familiar with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Kingdom Hearts protagonist Sora was officially enlisted for the roster on the Nintendo Switch game. You can read the full report by heading here.
