LCG Entertainment Revives Closed Telltale Games

Freshening up on the unfortunate closure of The Walking Dead developer Telltale Games, it seems that the abrupt studio shutdown is not the last of the episodic team as it has just been reported earlier today that the studio will be returning thanks to LCG Entertainment. According to Polygon, new studio head Jamie Ottilie and Brian Waddle will reintroduce the name studio with a fresh new team to work on new titles.

Ottilie shares with the gaming outlet that the new Telltale will be a smaller scale of the original studio. He goes on to clarify that those who worked apart the original Telltale team will be taking on positions as freelancers which could potentially lead to full-time positions with future projects.

Regarding what titles the revived developer will start on, Ottilie shares that previous projects like Batman and Wolf Among Us will continue to be expanded upon where the initial Telltale left off. However, as for the flagship Walking Dead franchise, Ottilie reminds that the license for the game is now owned by Skybound Games; the gaming division of the publication that produces the based comic series.

We’re still evaluating, but we definitely want to continue some of the stories. But it looks like The Walking Dead won’t be coming back. That license is now owned by Skybound which has its own plans for game releases.

Making the matters of the Walking Dead license status apparent, Skybound Games revealed back in July that the developer will be rereleasing the complete Telltale saga with an updated look and overall optimized “Definitive Series” which is aimed to release next month in September.

As for the remaining licenses that Telltale had worked with prior to its ultimate closure (Borderlands, Game of Thrones, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Minecraft) have yet to be disclosed as for its status with the new iteration of Telltale Games. Ottilie did grasp upon the previously planned Stranger Things title that was announced prior to the studio’s demise: sharing that the rights for said project has reverted back to Netflix.

The studio head have also suggested that the new team under LCG Entertainment will as well craft new IPs, but for what exactly will be shared at a later time. What do you think about the return of Telltale Games?
