After one take on the Spider-Man story from Insomniac Games in 2018, the game was an instant hit for many players over on PlayStation 4. The title even managed to dethrone Rocksteady Studios’ previous milestone held by Batman Arkham City for being the most-sold superhero title ever. Enough so that a spin-off, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, also spruced from the influence of its winnings.
What surpassed many fans excitement is the announcement for two more projects previously: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 & Marvel’s Wolverine. Currently, Insomniac Games is closing up on the major development on the highly-anticipated sequel. In a recent statement from the game studio, the team presses that it is aiming to release the new game sometime in late 2023 later this year.
Now according to a new comment from Jeff Grubb on a Giant Bomb livestream, he reveals that Marvel’s Wolverine is to push what players are familiar with the current universe shaped by Marvel’s Spider-Man by striving for a “hard R”, Video Game Chronicles transcribes. “I think an M-rated Wolverine could work, I think an M-rated superhero game could work, and this is probably the right character.
“Hard R is what they’re going for… that’s one of the concepts that I’ve heard. […] They will [also] avoid having any links or anything that evokes the Fox movies – they want it to stand on its own. I was trying to nail down the setting and have heard it will start before he joins the X-Men, which also makes sense for a Wolverine game…”
Grubb continues, “Maybe the surprising thing for me is that I’ve heard two different dates… I’ve heard as early as fall 2024, which would be wild. Insomniac is putting out Spider-Man 2 this fall… I’ve also heard internally they’re still very much talking about 2025, so let’s not be surprised if that’s what happens. But if anyone can pull off releasing two major, triple-A, massive games in back-to-back years, it is Insomniac.”
