Engaging in what Samsung has to offer with its televisions, the firm has continued to slowly integrate gaming with its displays – especially Xbox. When working closely with Microsoft, the firm was able to be one of the pioneering firms for xCloud ahead of its release in 2020. Additionally, its televisions was one of the first to introduce Xbox Game Pass to users via the Samsung Access Subscription that same year.
As xCloud became more prominent, users found out other Android-powered devices can run the cloud service. Namely smart fridges: yes, you read that right. One user on Instagram recorded Doom Eternal running with ease when pairing an Xbox controller. The firm has also collaborated with Google & Nvidia for native Stadia & GeForce Now applications respectively with plans to release this year.
Now on Thursday, Microsoft alongside Samsung has revealed that to have its own set of plans moving forward. In that, the first Xbox TV application is set to release this month on June 30th to introduce Xbox Cloud Gaming to the medium for users to access Xbox Game Pass with no device/console connected – a passion the firm hinted at just close to a year ago.
Last June, we shared our vision for bringing Xbox to more gamers by working with global TV manufacturers to embed the Xbox experience into Smart TVs. Today, the Xbox team provided an update on our approach and vision, which included how we’re making last year’s vision a reality by bringing the Xbox app to Smart TVs, starting with our partner Samsung, the global leader in TVs.
Together, Samsung and Xbox partnered to bring Xbox Game Pass to the millions of Samsung Galaxy phones around the world, and now we are partnering again to bring our Xbox gaming experience to their 2022 Smart TVs. I’m excited for you to experience cloud gaming on Smart TVs.
Ashley McKissick, Xbox Gaming Experience & Platforms Corporate Vice President
“We’re on a quest to bring the joy and community of gaming to everyone on the planet, and bringing the Xbox app to smart TVs is another step in making our vision a reality. That’s why we’re excited to partner with Samsung, a global leader in TVs, on bringing Xbox to more players. Working with Samsung has helped us provide more access to gaming and enabled us to welcome new players into our thriving community,” Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said in the Samsung press release.
Atop of Samsung televisions welcoming the new addition later this month, Samsung Smart Monitors are also receiving the same treatment since it also has the same Gaming Hub. “gamers can also look forward to an amazing gaming experience […] across Samsung’s 2022 Smart TV lineup and 2022 Smart Monitor Series..”
Noted, this is a separate initiative from Microsoft for Xbox Cloud Gaming being more prominent in the living room. Bringing in Project Keystone, the firm is looking to develop a streaming puck-like device which like this new application will not require users to own a console.
