Microsoft Touts Strong Cloud Gaming Turnout & Game Pass Records Despite Steady Hardware Decline In Recent Earnings

Currently, the refocus for Microsoft in gaming includes the adoption of PlayStation & Nintendo audiences. Although the firm is still working in hardware, releasing its first-party experiences outside of its ecosystem is a new effort by the firm. However, the firm does explain that hardware remains a focus. In on interview, Phil Spencer told that the Xbox company emphasizes on offering unique experiences through its consoles as well as the account integration for cross-buy compatibility.

However, the firm also has commented on what Xbox is exactly. More specifically, it has been addressed that Xbox is more than just the console with support for its titles through smartphones, Fire Stick, and Meta Quest. Its ‘This Is An Xbox’ campaign emphasizes this. Of course, Microsoft has considered the loss in favor of Xbox Game Pass. Similarly, the same can be said for its first-party titles too with a 80 percent loss thanks to the subscription too.

Previously, Microsoft did show to be in the green as per its Activision Blizzard deal in software & services amid the decline for hardware. And in its most recent FY25 Q2 earnings, this trend continues. Overall, gaming revenue has slumped by 7 percent according to the slide. As well as hardware also down with a 29 percent decline. However, Xbox content and services through Xbox Game Pass has climbed 2 percent.

As per statements from CEO Satya Nadella, Xbox Game Pass & Xbox Cloud Gaming do show to be benefiting from its new business model although traditional metrics are on a decline. “We are focused on improving the profitability of the business, in order to position it for long-term growth, driven by higher-margin content and platform services. […] We also continue to see strong momentum for Xbox Cloud Gaming, with a record 140 million hours streamed this quarter.

“All-up, Game Pass set a new quarterly record for revenue and grew its PC subscriber base by over 30%, as we focus on driving fully-paid subscribers across endpoints.” From the same earnings call, Nadella also addressed that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle since its release in December has been played by over 4 million users.

As the Xbox firm continues to follow this path, hardware appears to evolve into a niché for its dedicated users whilst exclusive content becomes multiplatform and Xbox Game Pass further extends its reach. This week, Playground Games announced that 2021 release Forza Horizon 5 will be coming to PlayStation 5 later this spring. You can read the full report by heading here.
