While it might not feel that long ago, Gears 5 only shipped in fall 2019. But what makes this more concerning is that the wait time between titles is certainly overstaying its welcome. Now in 2023, there has been little update on the plans for the IP nor official clarity on what The Coalition is tackling next. So far, the last major project was The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience previously.
So far, claims continue to surface on a Master Chief Collection-like bundle for Gears of War. Not to mention ongoing rumors telling Gears 6 is well into development too. However, a new statement from Jeff Grubb tells more. In that, he shared The Coalition was tackling two separate projects: a new IP was mentioned, but it was not determined if that is the case for both games.
Now recently, a new job listing has surfaced via Microsoft’s hiring portal revealing The Coalition is searching for candidates to work on the next Gears of War title evidently. ‘Senior Gameplay Designer– Gears of War’ the job posting title reads. However, it is not certain if this is for a new installment or for the claimed legacy collection, but the team is searching to incorporate new gameplay mechanics nonetheless.
“The Coalition is a Microsoft first-party development studio located in Vancouver, Canada. We are the official home of the Gears of War franchise, and our objective is to forge the future of the IP and push the limits of Microsoft’s entertainment platforms and devices. Our team is comprised of deep creative and technical talent from across our industry and beyond, working cohesively to delight our fan base and pass expectations of what is possible,” the description reads.
“As a studio, we lead from our values and work together to promote respect and inclusion, a growth mindset, G.R.I.T (Guts, Resourcefulness, Initiative & Tenacity), all while putting our team first! Join us and let’s go far together! The Coalition is seeking a skilled and experienced gameplay designer to help create AAA game experiences. We are searching for candidates with experience in Character, Camera and Controls (3Cs), or artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
“You have experience owning large scale features and guiding them from initial concept through to polish and completion. You will drive implementation of your design through collaboration across disciplines. We’re looking for a candidate who is creative, self-motivated and able to adapt to various modes of design work from high-level concepts to low-level tuning and balancing.”
In the past, The Coalition has listed positions to “forge the future” for Gears of War and to no avail as other passions took priority internally. Additionally, the team did go on to shelve announcements as it transitioned to Unreal Engine 5 more than a year ago, so what and when we hear from The Coalition directly is left for the future to share.
